Hey everyone. Welcome back to another episode of the No BS Dental Growth Podcast. I’m Chris Pistorius, and today we’re diving into a topic that I know causes a lot of headaches and maybe even some confusion for dental practices out there, and it’s social media. Um, we’re gonna talk specifically about what you should and definitely shouldn’t be posting online.
You know, social media can be a massive opportunity for your practice building trust, attracting a new. Patient base and even creating stronger relationships with your existing ones. But let’s be honest, it can also be a minefield. And if you’re not careful, um, it can get out of control. So in this episode, I’m gonna cover exactly what kind of content works best for dentists, the things that you need to steer clear of and some of the most common mistakes I see dental practices make over and over.
Plus, I will give you some quick tips and tools to make your social media strategy easier, faster, and way more effective. So grab your coffee or whatever keeps you going. Settle in and let’s get right into it. Okay, so let’s talk about why especially social media matters so much for dental practices.
First things first, social media isn’t just about likes, shares, or becoming internet famous. It’s about building trust and visibility for your practice in an increasingly. Competitive dental market. Your potential patients and even your existing ones are spending significant amounts of time scrolling through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and there’s a lot of others though if you’re not actively showing up where your patients are spending their attention.
You’re basically just handing your competitors a free opportunity and a free check when it’s done right. Though social media gives your practice a personality and a voice, it humanizes your team, shows your practice culture, and it makes your practice relatable. So think about it. I mean, a potential patient is far more likely to book an appointment with someone they feel connected to, someone who’s already provided them value online, and someone who’s approachable.
Here’s something important. Good social media isn’t just marketing, it’s patient education. So when you consistently post helpful content such as dental tips, preventative care advice, or information about common procedures, you’re building credibility and authority in your field. Patients see you as the expert.
When they’re ready to choose a dentist, your practice will naturally come to mind first. Also, social media helps reinforce existing patient relationships by staying top of mind through regular engaging posts. You’re reminding your current patients why they chose your practice in the first place and why they should stay.
So in short, social media isn’t optional anymore. It’s an essential part of your practice’s overall growth and patient retention strategy. It’s an investment of your time. That can pay off in huge ways. So coming up next, we’re gonna break down exactly what type of content you should be posting to get some of those results.
So let’s get specific now. Um, what exactly should you be posting on social media, um, as a dental practice or an orthodontic practice? So first up, educational content. This is huge. Think about simple dental tips. Clear explanations of common treatments, oral hygiene routines, or preventative care reminders.
Something as basic as a quick video on proper flossing technique can really resonate. Educational posts, establish your authority and patients appreciate the genuine value you’re bringing. Um. Providing and, and next behind the scenes content is gold. Patients love getting to know the real people behind the masks.
Highlight the team birthdays, practice anniversaries, fun moments from team events, or even show off your office pets if you have them. And trust me, people love pets even in. Medical providers offices. These posts build genuine connections and show your practice as human, approachable and relatable. You should also share patient success stories, of course, with permission, and this could include testimonials, reviews, and before and after photos.
Nothing demonstrates the impact of your work better than real life examples. It’s social proof that your practice delivers results and transforms, smiles. Interactive posts are another must have. Run polls. Host live q and a sessions, or simply ask open-ended questions like, what’s your biggest dental fear, or, which toothbrush brand do you prefer?
Encouraging your followers to engage helps you stay connected and gives your practice a personal touch. Lastly, share practice updates and news. Did you invest in a new technology or hire a new hygienist or win an award? Uh, maybe you’re offering a special promotion for dentist. Sharing these types of updates, uh, really keeps patients informed and reminds them that they’re part of something continually evolving and improving.
So remember this, the best dental, social media content is a balanced mix of education, personality, engagement. Genuine patient stories. Keep it consistent, authentic, and useful, and you’ll quickly build a loyal, engaged following. So now let’s flip the script and talk about the content that should absolutely stay off your dental practice’s, social media pages first, and please trust me on this, avoid posting.
Overly graphic clinical photos and videos. Um, I get it, you’re proud of your skillful root canals and surgical extractions, but you should, and you should be. But graphic images of these procedures are closeups of complex dental surgeries can seriously backfire, uh, by making followers uncomfortable or uneasy.
Um, I’ve just seen this happen way too many times. Instead, stick with approachable and appealing before and after images that clearly show the outcome. Without the gore part of it. Another major pitfall to avoid is posting sensitive or controversial topics. Steer clear of political opinions, religious discussions, or any other divisive content that could potentially alienate your patients.
Remember, your social media is a professional reflection of your practice. Keep the focus on dentistry and positive patient experiences. Also be careful to avoid sharing unverified medical claims. Or overly ambitious promises about results. Not only can this damage your reputation, but it can also potentially lead to legal trouble.
Nobody wants that, so always ensure that your content is accurate, ev evidence-based and backed by credible sources. Another big no-no is publicly engaging in negative interactions. If you get an unfavorable comment or complaint, never respond emotionally or defensively in the public comments. Instead, politely acknowledge the comment.
Publicly and quickly take the conversation offline by offering to address their concerns privately. This demonstrates professionalism and maturity. And finally, don’t flood your social media with constant salesy promotional posts. Big no-no here. No one wants to follow a page. It feels like an endless commercial.
Balance is key here. Aim to educate and engage your patients far more often than you pitch them your services. If you avoid these common mistakes, your practice’s, social media presence will be professional, welcoming, and far more effective at building trust and attracting new patients. So next up, let’s dive into some of the most frequent social, social media mistakes Dennis make and how to easily avoid them.
Alright, we’ve talked about what you should and shouldn’t post, but now let’s get real about the common social media mis. Mistakes that I see practices make all the time and exactly what you can do to avoid those same mistakes. The first big mistake that I see, not having a plan or a spec, specifically a content plan, so many dentists just wing it.
They post randomly. Then when they remember, or they only share content when there’s a sudden lull in appointments. Kind of knee jerk reaction type stuff. This inconsistency hurts your visibility and it weakens your patient engagement. To fix this, simply put together a basic content calendar. Plan your posts a month in advance and schedule them.
There are great tools like HubSpot Buffer or even Facebook’s built-in scheduler to make this easy. And trust me, consistency makes a massive difference here. Another huge mistake, ignoring comments and messages. Imagine this, somebody walks into your office, asks a question, and you are just silent. You just stare at them.
A little awkward, right? Well, ignoring social media interactions feels just as uncomfortable. So always respond promptly, professionally, and kindly even challenging comments or questions, even challenging ones that deserve a polite response. Um, this publicly demonstrates your commitment to patient care and service.
Then there’s the obsession with vanity metrics. Dentists sometimes get caught up in chasing likes, followers, and superficial engagement numbers. But guess what? These metrics don’t necessarily translate to more patients or better patient relationships. Instead, focus on real meaningful engagement conversations, direct messages, patient interactions, and the genuine relationships you’re building through your content.
So the bottom line here really is to avoid random posting. Never ignore engagement, and keep your eyes on the real prize, building meaningful connections that help your practice. So, coming up next, I’m gonna give you a quick rundown of some powerful tools and resources that make social media, uh, much easier and much more effective.
